National People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said he believes that certain MPs could have sold their vote during the election for a new President.

Dissanayake pointed out that Sri Lankan political history marks numerous occasions where MPs were “bought’ and “sold” similarly for political gains.

Dissanayake who contested in the election of succeeding President secured three votes.

Government MPs expressed their displeasure when Dissanayake made this comment. Responding to the MPs, Dissanayake said that it is his opinion and he has a right to word his opinion.

“I know that you get all fired up when I make this statement. There is no use saying this outside this House. I wanted to tell this to your faces. This parliament consist of uncivilized persons. I have no reason to believe that these uncivilized persons acted in a civilized manner during this election. This is my opinion. It should be recorded in history,” Dissanayake observed.
