A Chief Inspector of Police and a Police Sergeant have been interdicted after 11 years of a death of a police officer following a motor accident. The accident was reported 11 years ago when Sri Ranga was a Member of Parliament.
The car Ranga was traveling collided with a tree near the Settikulama Hospital and a police officer of the Minister’s Security Division who in the car at the moment was killed.
The interdiction was done yesterday (29) by order of the Inspector General of Police. Chief Inspector Roshan Sanjeeva, who was the OIC of Settikulama Police at the time of the accident, and Police Sergeant Priyadarshana Herath, who is currently attached to the Batticaloa Police Station, have been suspended. CI Sanjeewa was currently working in the Crime Division of Avissawella Police.
The car accident for which Roshan Sanjeeva is suspended took place on March 30, 2011. Police Sergeant Pushpa Kumara (36759) of the Ministerial Security Division, who was assigned to protect Sri Ranga MP, died there.
After this accident, it was said that the Settikulama police submitted a B report with false information to court that the car was driven by the deceased officer. In this regard, the wife of the deceased police sergeant had filed a complaint to former IGP NK Ilangakoon. Accordingly, in the investigation, it is revealed that under the influence of several high police officers, the deceased officer was presented as the driver by changing the evidence regarding the accident.
In the investigation conducted by the Police Special Investigation Unit, it is revealed that according to a notice given by Mahinda Balasuriya, who was the Inspector General of Police at the time of the accident, the deceased officer was recorded as the driver in the police books. It is said that Roshan Sanjeeva, who was the OIC of Settikulama police station at that time, has expressed his objection. Then he was called to Colombo by IGP Balasuriya, and it was revealed that the police records had been changed to show that the deceased sergeant was the driver at the time of the accident. But due to the fact that Roshan Sanjeeva was serving as the OIC at that time, he has also been charged in this regard, a senior police officer said.
