In some ways, most router and modem combos are largely the same, offering virtually the same speeds and functionality as several other products. This is mainly due to the constraints put in place by the actual ISPs, but the point remains. This may be why so many are okay with merely renting a router/modem combo from their ISP, and never thinking twice about it.

The Motorola MG7550 AC1900 Modem and Router combo proves this notion wrong, and warrants plenty of attention as to why one should consider making the upgrade — even if they’ve purchased a router modem combo already.

This device manages to offer users as much as it possibly can on its own, providing a number of distinct advantages that supersede whichever ISP you currently use. And while it may be a bit on the pricey side, its’ safe to say you’ll find the initial added expense worth it.

Review

The Motorola MG7550 AC1900 Modem and Router looks just like most other devices, with a tower design, a few lights on the front, and some connections in the back. But, it’s what’s on the inside that truly counts.

First off, know that this device is compatible with seemingly every major ISP, and should have no problems being integrated into your internet setup, whether it’s Comcast, Cox, Xfinity, and several others. It’s essentially a plug-n-play device, with a quick and simple setup.

Once it’s up and running, the MG7550 AC1900 Modem and Router can reach speeds of up to 686 Mbps, and utilizes DOCSIS 3.0 technology, ensuring it’s up to date with today’s speed standards. The connection it provides is also extremely reliable, with drop-offs and disconnects a rarity.

The modem component uses a 16x4 channel configuration, and offers dual-band frequencies, offering the usual 2.4 and 5 GHz options, which allows users to split their devices onto separate channels to improve reliability and overall speeds — and potentially increase Wi-Fi signal range.

Speaking of range, the integrated router uses a feature known as Power Boost, which can be used to amplify wireless signals to their full legal limit, which not only ensures the signal is strong enough to remain consistent throughout the entire house, but also outside. So, if you like using your laptop on the porch, you won’t need to worry about the signal fading.

While this is a router and modem combined, the MG7550 AC1900 Modem and Router includes four 10/100/1000 Gigabit ethernet ports on the back, so you can connect up to four physical devices at once for maximum speeds.

The MG7550 AC1900 Modem and Router takes things even further by including FirewallDFS, along with built-in Denial of Service attack prevention, to ensure maximum security in addition to its blazing speeds and wide wireless range.

What We Like

  • There’s a lot to appreciate here. This modem and router combo does all the things the average user could ask for, such as reliable connections, fast speeds, and a much stronger wireless range than average devices. The Power Boost features is a big selling point, along with the integrated security features. Oh, and the device is also available in white!

What We Don’t Like

  • The price may be an issue for some, as it’s just around $129.99.
  • Even with the higher price, it’s worth keeping in mind that renting an inferior router/modem combo from your ISP for a full year will come close to the upfront cost for this device. In the end, you’re still paying the same amount, only you actually own this device, and it’s likely much better than what you currently rent.

Buying Advice

As with any router and modem purchase, it’s important that you first ensure that it’s compatible with your ISP. This device is one of the most widely compatible on the market, but it’s still best to always check before buying, especially if you live in an area with smaller ISP companies.

The next aspects most will consider if the speed and actual wireless range. Since this is a router and modem combo, it’s safe to assume buyers will want good wireless range, and not just rely on ethernet ports for their media players and computers.

The MG7550 AC1900 Modem and Router offers very high speeds, but this needs to be seen in the context of the maximum speeds your ISP can even offer in the first place. For instance, if your device can reach a maximum of 500 Mbps, but your ISP only offers 300 Mbps, you’re only going to get 300 Mbps until the ISP eventually increases speeds.

Also, if you have a media storage device, or media player that has an ethernet port, this device can offer the fastest speeds possible due to the direct connections. Many router modem combos offer at least one, but this has four, so you can connect several devices and attain fast speeds for each — including computers.

Verdict

The MG7550 AC1900 Modem and Router is everything you could want from a combo device. Not only does it offer a massive wireless range, its 600+ maximum Mbps speeds mean it will not be outdated in a year.

This router modem combo may be priced on the higher side of things, but if you currently rent one, it will pay for itself in a year. EVen if you don’t rent, the price tag is still low enough to be affordable for most, and the years of maximum performance to come will make the cost more than worth it. This is our favorite router modem combo for average households — by far.
