“Mother!” Was A Mothafuckin’ Flop At The Box Office

If you took a peek on CinemaScore this weekend, you probably saw mother! had an F” rating and instead went with the rest of the world to see It, which remained at the top of the weekend box office for the second week in a row. Even though critics have given the Darren Aronofsky-directed mother! a nearly 70% Rotten Tomatoes rating, viewers have likely renamed the movie mother!fucker, I can’t believe I spent $20 to see this at the fancy movie theater in town.

Box Office Mojo says It raked in another $60 million this weekend to bring its total U.S. haul to over $218 million. In comparison, mother! made $7.5 million and has the distinction of being one of only 19 films to over get an “F” from Cinema Score. That’s kind of like failing a Buzzfeed “What Jennifer Aniston Hairstyle Are You?” quiz. Deadline says moviegoers felt duped since mother! was like the dude on Grindr who promises 8 inches and a donkey punch, and you get there and he only delivers 5 and some cuddles.

Paramount marketed the movie as a horror movie and even ran ads ahead of It last weekend promising, “In one week, in this theater, one movie will mess you up for life…You will never forget where you were the first time you saw mother!Viewers went in expecting to see Michelle Pfeiffer chase Jennifer Lawrence around with a chainsaw after she told one fart joke too many were sorely mistaken. (SPOILER ALERT) They didn’t get that. It got so bad that Paramount (via Entertainment Weekly) had to release a defense of the movie earlier today:

“This movie is very audacious and brave. You are talking about a director at the top of his game, and an actress at the top her game. They made a movie that was intended to be bold. Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no one else wants to tell. This is our version. We don’t want all movies to be safe. And it’s okay if some people don’t like it.”

Ha! Paramount should have saved themselves the word count and just sent out a mass Dorinda Medley “I made it nice!gif as a defense.
