Mother, Son Remanded Over Stepfather’s Killing

Galle Chief Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeewani Pathirana remanded a mother and a son who had been arrested and produced before Court in connection with the murder of a man who was assaulted in a quarrel over a family dispute, until April 18.

The remanded suspects are Mahadura Sumanawathi (65) and Liyanadura Sumith Mendis (49). The son is an offspring of the woman’s former marriage.

The deceased had left the first marriage and married the suspect for a second time and the woman who had been so married had also been married before. After the marriage, everyone, including the 49-year-old son of her previous marriage, his three children, and the child of the deceased’s first marriage had lived together in the same household. Meanwhile, the deceased had been arguing over suspicions about the son from her previous marriage, the police investigations reveal.

According to the police, he had been beaten to death during a dispute and one more suspect was to be arrested. The respective postmortem was conducted by the Assistant Judicial Medical Officer of the Karapitiya Medical Faculty Anuruddha Uhanowita and the suspect was produced before the court by Sub Inspector Mahilal on the instructions of OIC of the Galle Police CID DG Ananda.

Further investigations are being carried out by a team of officers headed by Galle police CID, OIC Chief Inspector D.G Ananda on the instructions of Galle Police Headquarters Inspector Kapila Senapathy De Silva.
