The mother who left the five-day-old baby near a Buddhist shrine on the Alakaduwa Road in Alawathugoda was arrested by the Alawathugoda Police.

She was produced before the Kandy Additional Magistrate, and was remanded till May 11.

According to the police, the concerned mother was presented to court with a report under the charge of child cruelty. The Additional Magistrate has informed Prison officials to refer the suspect to the prison hospital and make necessary arrangements to breast feed the child.

The day before the Vesak Poya day, the suspected mother came in a lorry and left her five-day-old baby near the Buddha shrine. After finding the relevant footage recorded in a CCTV camera, police had uncovered information about the mother based on the statements obtained from the driver of the lorry.

Police investigations revealed that the 37-year-old woman, who was arrested on suspicion, has two more children. The mother has told the police that her husband had raised suspicions that the third child was not his, so she decided to abandon the child. Police are investigating.
