These charts use information in a new Economist / YouGov Poll -- done between November 5th and 7th of a random national sample of 1,500 adults (including 1,336 registered voters), with a 3.2 point margin of error.
They show why the GOP's tax cut plan is just not gaining the support of most Americans. About 57% say the plan will not give them a tax cut, and another 30% say they are not sure. Americans also don't think most other Americans will benefit either -- with 54% saying most Americans will not get a tax cut under the GOP plan, and another 26% being unsure.
The people do think the GOP plan is designed to help the wealthiest people. About 54% say the rich will get a tax cut (while only 28% think they won't).
The Republicans are trying to rush their plan through Congress. I think that's a mistake, since most people don't support the plan. They would be better served to take the time to convince Americans that the plan is good for them. Of course, they would then have to change the plan to benefit ordinary people instead of wealthy people (and corporations) -- something they are not likely to do (since their real constituency is the rich and the corporations).
