With the addition of 14 hybrid electric buses into its fleet, nearly one-third of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority’s buses are now hybrids.

The NFTA, on June 18, welcomed the new buses — giving the transit agency 98 hybrids in its 307-bus fleet. The NFTA was one of the first transit agency’s in the state to introduce hybrid buses into its fleet.

The new buses will run regular routes in Erie and Niagara counties.

The NFTA invested $8.6 million on the new buses.

“By increasing our number of hybrids, we are not only being socially responsible by reducing air pollution, and our dependency on foreign oil, we are also dramatically lowering our operating costs based on improved fuel consumption and a decrease in maintenance costs,” said Howard Zemsky, NFTA chairman.
