Between July and September the ancient icons of Sheep Mountain share moonshine and hot dogs for a lovely lunch, with visitors in the Salzkammergut region of Austria.

The Ancient Icons

The SchafbergBahn cog railway runs steam engines between July and September on what are affectionately termed ‘Nostalgia’ trips. Whether the taste of hot dogs enjoyed in childhood brings about a yearning for the past or you just have a general interest in in days gone-by, a trip on the SchafbergBahn coal-fired  steam engines will be sure to delight.

These ancient icons of the hills are lovingly tended and make their way up the mountain to some 1783 metres above sea level, where you can see 360º of breath-taking beauty. The smokey blue mountains stretch as far as the eye can see and the clear waters of of many lakes glisten below.

Dates and times of these nostalgic and most romantic trips can be found here. Whether it’s a hot dog delight or an ‘Early Bird Special’ with Austrian folklore music and culinary treats, you’re sure to find something to make your trip most memorable.

Moonshine

The term ‘moonshine’ dates back to the times of early English smugglers and illegal Appalacian distillers, who clandestinely produced and distributed illicitly distilled drink – usually whiskey. By the light of the moon they crept with stealth to their forbidden distilleries or scurried from boat to cave to store their booty, the ‘moonshine’.

But the ‘moonshine’ you’ll enjoy on the SchafbergBahn is of a more romantic kind. In the fading light of day, you will see the superb spectacle of the sun setting over the mountain tops and the moon rise to its full glory, whilst being gently serenaded with sweet music from the maestros.
