Moong Dal Halwa


Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow gram)
  • 11/2 cup milk, warmed
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom (elaichi) powder
  •  Pinch of saffron (kesar) strands
  • 1/4 cup ghee
  • For the garnish
  • Few sliced almonds (badam)

Method:

  1. Soak the moong dal in water for 4-6 hours.
  2. Drain and grind to a coarse paste using very little water.
  3. In another pan heat 1/2 cup of milk and Add pinch of saffron and mix well .Switch off heat.
  4. Heat sugar and 1 cup water in another non-stick pan. Cook till sugar dissolves completely.
  5. Heat ghee in a broad pan melts the ghee. Add moong dal paste and mix well. Stir the mixture continuously on a low flame till it becomes golden brown.
  6. Add in the warm milk and 1 cup of warm water mix and cook, stirring continuously till all the moisture has been absorbed, cook on a slow flame till the ghee separates.
  7. Add the cardamom powder and saffron milk and mix well cook for 5-8 minutes.
  8. Garnish with slivers of almonds.
  9. Serve hot.
