Moong Dal Cheela Recipe

By Hemapriya Natesan @MyLittleMoppet

We're in exam season now, which means stressful times for both parents and kids! This is usually when kids get engrossed in finishing up their lessons, and timely meals often go out the window. However, we all agree that there can be absolutely no compromise when it comes to breakfast! So ensure your child gets his fill of protein for all that hard work he's doing, with this yummy and nutritious Moong Dal Cheela Recipe, also called a Pesarattu in some regions.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Split green gram skinless (dhuli moong dal)
  • 1 1/2 inch piece Ginger roughly chopped
  • 5-6 cloves Garlic roughly chopped
  • 1 Onion roughly chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 tsp hing
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • Ghee to shallow fry

Method:

1. Soak the moong dal in water for about half an hour. Drain and grind with ginger, garlic, onion to a smooth batter. Add all the seasonings.

2. Heat a tawa and grease it. Pour a ladle of batter on the tawa and spread round to make a thin dosa.

3. Drizzle a little ghee over the cheela and cook on medium heat till one side is done. Flip over carefully, drizzle a little ghee and cook till the other side is done too.

You can serve with chutney of your choice, although my preferred option is homemade tamarind chutney. This makes for a nice change from regular rice dosas and is extremely healthy with the goodness of protein. Start your day with this and you'll be full of energy for both study and play!
