Bunnahabhain Discovers Rare 40 YO Islay

Bunnahabhain has announced that it will release a one-off rare single malt that has lain undiscovered for four decades at the Islay distillery.

Bunnahabhain distillery, which is located on the north-east of the isle, will release only 750 bottles, which will be individually numbered and hand signed.

Hidden for 40 years, the whisky quietly matured until Master Distiller, Ian MacMillan, discovered the casks listed in the distillery ledgers: “It was an exhilarating moment to stumble on such a special find,” he said. “There are very few 40 year old Islays and unlike any other, Bunnahabhain’s taste is considered unique because the distillery does not heavily peat the fine malted barley.”

The Master Distiller recognised the significance of the discovery after finding the ‘Turney’ casks, which were filled with the precious Bunnahabhain malt over 40 years ago by eminent Glasgow wine merchants, J G Turney, and renowned for being the highest standard of quality.

Michelle Lansdowne, Senior Brand Manager at Burn Stewart, added: “ We are expecting a good deal of market interest in the 40 YO  and with such limited availability of this one-off prestige bottling, it is sure to appeal to international collectors of rare malts.”

To capture the extraordinary journey, Bunnahabhain commissioned renowned illustrator, Iain McIntosh, to retrace the voyage through the specially designed labels. Each bottle is presented in a bespoke oak gift box containing a secret compartment that reveals hidden designs replicating the ‘Journey of Discovery.’

The multi-award winning Bunnahabhain is the flagship malt whisky from Burn Stewart Distillers and is exported to over 30 countries globally. Unlike its neighbouring distilleries on the Island, Bunnahabhain embodies “the gentle taste of Islay”, as it is the only non-peated Islay malt.

Bunnahabhain 40 YOSuggested Retail Price: £1,999Unchill-filtered (41.7% ABV) For further information please contact Stephanie Robertson or Sarah Stringfellow at Stripe Communications on  0131 561 8628 bunnahabhain@stripecom.co.uk Notes to Editors:
  • Situated on the northern shore of Islay, Bunnahabhain Distillery was founded in 1881 by William Robertson and brothers James and William Greenless
  • Bunnahabhain is Gaelic for ‘mouth of the river’ and the distillery is situated right at the shoreline, close to where the Margadale River flows into Bunnahabhain Bay
  • In 2003 Bunnahabhain was sold to Burn Stewart Distilleries for £10 million.  Today, production stands at 2.5 million litres a year.  Of this, 21,000 casks are kept at the distillery for maturation and the resultant whisky is used for the Black Bottle blend and for bottling as Bunnahabhain single malt

Dewar’s Scotch Whisky is excited to offer an exclusive preview of its brand-new campaign, “The Drinking Man’s Scotch,” that just recently launched.

This edgy new campaign—which marks Dewar’s return to national television after a five year absence—subverts the tired conventions and tradition that dominate Scotch whisky. Centered around the gritty world of the campaign’s icon—a beautiful, alluring and mysterious Scottish woman with the presence of a queen and the mouth of a gangster—“The Drinking Man’s Scotch” reintroduces Dewar’s to a new generation of modern men through the icon’s signature words of wisdom, such as, “Serious is not always easy, but it comes with serious benefits” and “Speed is often the enemy of true pleasure.”

Dewar’s Scotch Whisky is excited to share with you this exclusive preview of “The Drinking Man’s Scotch.”…

WILMINGTON, DE – On Tuesday, November 13 from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m., all nine locations of Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant will host a special Give 20 Fundraiser to support the American Red Cross and their clean-up and recovery efforts in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.  Guests can obtain the Give 20 vouchers online and print them out, then dine at any Iron Hill location and turn in the voucher to see 20% of their bill, excluding alcoholic beverages, donated to the Red Cross.

“With so much of our region affected by this unprecedented disaster, we knew immediately that we wanted to help, and our company-wide Give 20 initiative has always been a terrific way for us to contribute to charitable causes,” says Founding Partner Kevin Finn.  “This special day-long Give 20 is our way of showing support and solidarity with all those whose lives were impacted by this devastating storm.”

Guests interested in participating in this fundraiser should visit this link to print out a Give 20 voucher and bring it with them when they dine at any Iron Hill location on Tuesday.  Any guest presenting a voucher on that day will see 20% of their bill donated to the Red Cross.  Red Cross workers have set up shelters and distributed much-needed supplies to people affected by Superstorm Sandy, the tropical storm that brought historic storm surges, widespread flooding and damaging winds to the New York and New Jersey coastlines earlier this month.

Iron Hill’s visionary Give 20 program is the group’s way of supporting a wide variety of charitable and non-profit initiatives.  When a guest approaches the restaurant about a donation, they create custom Give 20 vouchers for that guest to distribute, good for a specific night, and on that night, any guest dining with a voucher will have 20% of their bill, excluding alcoholic beverages, donated to that cause.

Founded by home brewers Mark Edelson and Kevin Finn and restaurateur Kevin Davies in Newark, DE in 1996, Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant has blossomed from one restaurant and brewery to nine locations across the mid-Atlantic.  Each is dedicated to producing and serving top-quality hand-crafted beers and cuisine in a warm and hospitable setting, and all are open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.  Their acclaimed beers have accumulated a wealth of awards from the nation’s top beer festivals, and their restaurants have earned more than 100 “Best of” nods from local and national publications.

Suntory Takes Top Honors At The International Spirits Challenge 2012

Suntory Liquors is pleased to announce that it has been named “Distiller of the Year” at the 17th International Spirits Challenge (ISC) 2012 held on Monday, November 5, in London, England. This declaration is an annual honor bestowed upon the distiller who consistently produces a variety of high-quality products. Suntory has now received the “Distiller of the Year” award for two years running, a testament to the brand’s reputation for quality products as well as superb malt whisky production techniques.

This prestigious award also coincides with the designation of its single-malt whiskies Yamazaki 18 year old and Hakushu 25 year old as the winning trophies in the Whisky category. Yamazaki 18 year old and Hakushu 25 year old, which competed among approximately 350 whisky products in the event, were given the top spots as the best products in the Whisky category. It is the first time in ISC history that a distiller has won multiple trophies in the Whisky category.  Suntory received high praise, such as that from Gordon Motion, Master Blender of Edrington Distillers, who said, “Yamazaki 18 year old and Hakushu 25 year old single malts were outstanding. The overall quality of the Suntory whiskies was very clear.”   http://www.suntory.com/business/liquor/whisky.html
