Moments Of Inspiration: PUTTING OFF PROCRASTINATION

By Lifestreasury

If I got a dollar for each time I put off doing something when I ought to do it … mehn… I probably wouldn’t have a single dollar! Because knowing me, I’d put off actually collecting the money until it became too late. Yep, procrastination is one of the bad things I’m unfortunately good at.
Simply put, procrastination is not doing what you what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it, and without a valid reason for the delay. See eh, procrastination is TERRIBLE. I’ve lost more opportunities, friendships, money, even food sef than I care to count, all because I kept procrastinating. I’m currently fighting myself on this procrastination issue. It’s an intense, minute-by-minute battle and I thought to share what I’ve learnt so far.
The first step to dealing with procrastination is to give the excuses and blame games a rest. Accept responsibility for your actions. Change begins when you acknowledge that even if the electricity had not gone off, you probably would not have written that article because you would have become so tired, hungry or something.
I believe the root of procrastination is laziness and complacency. The book of Proverbs says a lot about laziness - what it is and what it causes. I recommend that everyone struggling with procrastination should read and meditate on the book of Proverbs. Pray over each lesson and make use of God’s ever-available grace to put it into practice.
In order to consistently say no to procrastination, one needs to see the bigger picture (end goal) and know the purpose behind what needs to be done. Knowing why you need to send that text message, or wake up and pray, acts as instant motivation to do the right thing, believe me. Of course, your reason has to be a right one. Seeing things in light of the bigger picture also helps one to prioritise things correctly.
Another thing one should do to beat procrastination is to make a list of what needs to be done, and right from the beginning, set an action timeline. Arrange things in order of priority. And remember that at times things beyond our control cause us not to do certain things within our planned timeline. There’s no need to beat yourself up when that happens. Remember the question is whether or not there is a valid (objectively valid o) reason for the delay in action.
Another thing that helps in fighting procrastination is being accountable. Inform a friend of what you plan to do and when you intend to do it. Urge them to bother you remind you of it until you get it done.
Also, just do it. Yes, Nike got it. Don’t wait for the conditions to be just right. Start now. As The teacher says: “He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap.” – Ecclesiastes 11:4.
Remember that rewards come after the job is done, not before. So no resting before the work is done. Feel free to treat yourself once you tick off things on your list though.
Lastly, understand the consequences of procrastination. James 4:17 tells us that: “Anyone who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.”  Procrastination, if not curbed, will take you to hell. It’s that serious.
Have an amazing week, lovelies. Thanks for reading! Do share how your tips on how to get things done right on time.
