But I think you’ll agree that this Indiana town coffee shop and local hangout has elephants on the brain–and rightly so.

Modoc’s Market in Wabash, Indiana

Take a step back in Indiana history. The Great American Circus was setting up for its 6th (but final) annual act at Wabash High School in 1942.

While waiting outside for her act, a dog barked at the Indian elephant. Modoc bolted–heading right to downtown Wabash!

What is now the location of Modoc’s Market was once the site of the Bradley Brothers Pharmacy. Inside, they happened to be roasting peanuts. What animal is it that loves peanuts?

Modoc tore through the front window and gobbled down the freshly roasted peanuts. Then? She rolled a woman around on the floor a bit. Bored, she took off, taking out the back door.

Capturing Modoc

Modocs Market in Wabash, Indiana: Follow The Elephant-Lined Road!

You can imagine the chaos involved  in trying to get this elephant back!

Modoc managed to hop back and forth along the Wabash River five times, angering farmers and everyone else left in her destructive wake!

It took five days for trainers and many others to successfully capture Modoc again. In that relatively brief amount of time she lost 800 pounds and snagged headlines around the country!

Modoc’s Market Today

It’s certainly a lot more peaceful and pleasant than that day back in 1942!

Modoc’s Market menu has a phenomenal selection of coffee and non-coffee drinks. I had the Chocolate Chai Tea (which was awesome).

Of course, there’s the usual coffee beverages and smoothies, too!

What’s pretty neat is that the coffee at Modoc’s Market is prepared right next door at the Old Canal Coffee Company.

You’ll also find baked goods, snacks, and all sorts of stuff at this roomy coffee shop. Browse the walls before you head out. There’s lot of interesting Modoc photos!
