Just when I think I’m all comfortable with my daughter being in another state for college, it’s time for another one of those “Mommy Milestones”…. *sigh*. You know, those periods of time in a child’s life that somehow also become the milestone of the parent too.
For me… this one is the Greyhound Bus. Oh yeah, at first I was all like… “I think you should
Then I stopped. (hammertime, lol) and thought… wow… just when you think you totally trust your child… you have one more bridge to cross, one more hurdle to make it over. I have also realized that this isn’t much different from the first time I let her go trick-or-treating without me, to a sleepover, drive by herself for the first time, go on her first date, or walk somewhere alone. All it is, is simply a matter providing her with the tools to succeed, and having faith in my kid. So I called the University and got all of the information on the when’s and where’s and what time’s. And just like when she was younger… we talked about what to do, safety, and being responsible.
And to finally put worry and doubt to rest… I think there’s crowning thought in this whole thing about trusting our children… it is crucial that the parent also trust themselves! Trust that we’ve given our children proper guidance, love, and the wearwithall to make decisions… and more importantly to deal with those decisions whether or not we think they are correct at the time. In the end we have to let go and see what happens.
And seriously, what’s the worst that can happen in this case…. we all end up spending Thanksgiving in warm and sunny Florida instead of chilly Ohio?
