Microsoft 365 Apps to End Internet Explorer Support Next Year

Internet Explorer's days have been numbered since Microsoft launched its Edge browser five years ago. Microsoft appears to be another step closer to moving closer to web browser exit, with the announcement that the Microsoft 365 apps suite will end support for Internet Explorer 11 on August 17, 2021, the company said on Monday .

Microsoft Teams chat and collaboration service users will lose support for IE 11 a bit sooner, Microsoft said in a blog post on Nov. 30. Microsoft also announced that it will end support for the Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app on March 9, 2021.

According to this data, 365 and team users "have a degraded experience" or cannot use the browser to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services, Microsoft said. The company said the move was part of a natural evolution in web browsers.

"Customers have been using IE 11 since 2013, when the online environment was much less demanding than the landscape today," said Microsoft. "Since then, open web standards and newer browsers - like the new Microsoft Edge - have enabled better and more innovative online experiences."

Microsoft launched Edge five years ago and tried a fresh start after years of watching its once dominant Internet Explorer lose its luster. Microsoft has introduced web technology in recent years as Microsoft's Windows operating system competes with mobile operating systems like Google's Android and Apple's iOS and iPadOS. All of these operating systems use web technology.

A fundamental change for the browser came in 2018 when Microsoft announced this Rebuild the Edge browser on Google's Chromium, an open source project that resides at the heart of the Chrome browser. The move was billed as an improvement for both web developers and Windows users, which resulted in less complexity for developers and fewer websites that would not function properly for web users.
