Michter’s Straight Rye Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

Every Michter’s Straight Rye is a single barrel so your experience might be a bit different than mine unless you also snag a bottle from barrel 17F988. The Michter’s name is one of historical significance and originated in Pennsylvania, but in recent years the name was picked up by a Whiskey NDP who bottles other distillery’s whiskey under their own label.

In general I don’t have anything against the practice, tons of brands I love do that. What makes me upset is when brands lie about it. Which MIchter’s did for a while, they’ve since come clear to say they source it, but there was a time where they were being super shady about the whole thing, but at least they came clean before they got sued over it.

Michter’s Straight Rye Review: OVERALL

The second I opened the Michter’s Straight Rye it made me think of the Woodford Reserve Rye. It’s a soft supple rye that’s unchallenging an doesn’t give up much in the way of character. I don’t have much to complain about, but I don’t have much to talk about either. The aroma is sweet and light, the palate is light and sweet and the finish barely qualifies for a medium length.

Michter’s Straight Rye is just an ok rye whiskey. Kinda wish I didn’t buy a whole bottle to be honest. Even though it’s cheap it’s not going to be something I immediately reach for when I get home so it’s going to sit for a bit unfortunately till we do another rye event at the whiskey clubs.
