After a series of disappointments in this year’s Senate cycle, its time for some really good news for Democrats. Michelle Nunn, CEO of the volunteer organization Points of Light and daughter of longtime Sen. Sam Nunn, has decided that she will make a run at the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
Nunn, who has been hyped as a Senate candidate for almost a decade now, was one of the last big-name recruits who had not yet announce their 2014 intentions.
As we talked about late last week, Nunn’s best shot at winning this race resides in the ability of a far-right candidate such as Reps. Paul Broun or Phil Gingrey winning the Republican nomination. But she still has a very good profile of being an executive at a huge charity as well as being the daughter of a longtime Senator. Georgia isn’t AS red as states like South Carolina or Alabama so there is some potential for Nunn to do very well especially if she can pump out the urban vote.
The announcement of Nunn entering the race is key for the DSCC though after two of its top recruits in Brian Schweitzer of Montana and Stephanie Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota decided to not enter Senate races in their state. Nunn may or may not win, but she actually is someone that can really benefit if Georgia Republicans vote for a tea-flavored candidate.
Now, Democratic recruiters heads will probably swivel to West Virginia as we wait on word from Secretary of State Natalie Tennant on if she’ll enter the race or not.
