This prequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien movies is an origin tale in every sense of the word. It is an epic sci-fi adventure in pursuit of the answer to the ultimate question. Where did we come from?
Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) is out to find the creators of man-kind. She’s not in search of any god, but the creatures who she believes, with strong evidence to support her, created the race of man.
“The Architects” is the name that they give them. ”They” being Shaw and her partner/boyfriend Charlie (Logan Marshall-Green) who have traveled the globe searching for evidence of these other-worldly beings. Now they’re traveling across the universe to find more answers.
Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw is a force to be reckoned with. Of course, anyone who’s seen her in the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo would not be surprised. She is fierce and brilliant yet again.
Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), another strong lady, is (financially speaking) in charge of this expedition and she doesn’t let anyone forget it. Along with David (Michael Fassbender), a robot with favorite movies, whose existence calls in to question the power of creation, as well as the reasons behind it; Janek (Idris Elba) the captain, and a handful of other crew members, complete the passenger list of Prometheus, the ship that will lead them to that which they seek.
Well, that which some of them seek. Because in a story where someone is looking for the ultimate answer there has to be someone who doesn’t want to know. The dissension of course calls into question the very nature of humanity and our curiosity. All this and there’s plenty of gore to go around too, but not before you see some truly breathtaking landscapes and a really well told story.
What this movie did most brilliantly was create suspense before it even hit theaters. As someone who’s never seen or had much of an interest in this series, I was completely intrigued by the mystery.
Did it live up to the mysterious hype? How could it? That’s not to say it’s a bad film. It’s not, it’s quite good. Nothing’s as fantastic once the veil has been lifted. Fortunately that is the very principle on which this story is founded on. What do we do once we’ve answered the question we’re searching for? All I can tell you is there will probably be a sequel. Question answered.
