Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings do it again, fighting back from two nerve-wracking deficits to defeat China in a two game sweep and move on to the Olympic gold medal match for beach volleyball.
This is big news but nothing new for the formidable duo, who have strutted their volleyball prowess all around the world and the Olympic games since they partnered up in 2001.
After defeating Brazil in the 2004 Athens Olympics, May-Treanor and Walsh-Jennings returned with tsunami force in 2008; where they defeated the first-seeded Chinese team in a two game sweep in Beijing. They went on to achieve Olympic fame by becoming the only beach volleyball duo to win two consecutive gold medals.
Their return to the Games in London is just as strong, extending their Olympic winning streak to 32 sets without a loss in the preliminary round, defeating Australia and the Czech Republic. That streak came to an end with a loss at the hands of the Schwaiger sisters from Austria, but the American duo were able to win the match 17–21, 21–8, 15–10.
The win over China sets May-Treanor and Walsh-Jennings up to have another chance at gold, which would only further their Olympic fame: winning two gold medals as a duo in beach volleyball was record-breaking; winning three is almost unimaginable. Yet they’ll have that chance on Wednesday, where they will face another American team, former world champions Jennifer Kessy and April Ross.
