Another pub with at the eponymous HKV!!!!!! This was the first thought in my mind when we received an invite for the review. We did go there on a Friday afternoon. The place is an effort of first time restaurateurs Amit Panda and Mahavir Mohanty. Situated in a first floor, the place has the European countryside pub feeling. The wooden furniture, Posters of Hollywood Classics, iconic rock stars, covers of comics, photographs of legendary sport stars in action takes you to the era 70s & 80s.It has both closed and alfresco dining areas. While the indoor area is one where the most of the action is, be it live music, sports screenings, movie screenings; the outdoor area is more of a place to converse. The menu is a printed in a tabloid style with small brief of every dish. The menu has the classics from everywhere, from Fish ‘n’ Chips to Pork Vindaloo.
We were served Pigs in a Blanket and Crumbed Fried Chicken Platter first. Pigs in a Blanket was attuned to the classic recipe of bacon wrapped around cocktails sausages. The cocktail sausages were spicy and flavorsome. Since I am not much of a pork lover, I put my hands on Crumbed Fried Chicken Platter which was done brilliantly. The outer layer was crisp, not very oily and from the inside it was soft the juicy. The best thing was it hadn’t turned soggy even after 10 mins. The next was Fish ‘n’ Chipswhich were done nicely – crispy outer layer and juicy from inside with full of flavor. Instead of chips, it was served with nicely done McDonald styled fries. The last snack we ordered was Lebanese Roll, which is there take on Shwarma. While we were discussing about the analogy of rolls, two big rolls wrapped in an aluminum foil arrive at our table. The first bite of it made a crisp and crunchy sound because of crispy roll and crunchy veggies. The best thing about it was the big pieces of chicken which were balancing the crunch.By this time I was full and didn’t have the capacity to have a single bite more.As it is a pub, the main course section has been kept limited. So Maneesh ordered Pork Vindaloo with Steamed Rice. He loved it for the quality of pork pieces. Though it was far from an originality, but it was tasty and spicy.Along the food we ordered a couple of cocktails and shakes. While the food was surprising us for being tasty, drinks were disappointing us. Since it’s a new place (3 month old) there is scope of improving upon. The food is the highlight of Matchbox. It has everything from everywhere, but with their own touch. We were highlyimpressed by the Amit’s enthusiasm and passion and hope the place will rock in time to come.
