Marrakech; a Honeymoon Winter Warmer

By Honeymoonblogger

An exotic city of mosques, markets and minarets, Marrakech is an ideal romantic getaway this February. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, why not surprise your other half with a long weekend in this colourful city of culture and romance.

Easier than ever to get to with direct flights from most British airports, whisk your loved one away from the cold and into the sultry warmth of an Arabian night. Enjoy the romantic charm of the medieval streets, Arab-esque arches and souks piled high with merchandise as you explore this vibrant city. Set against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains, Marrakech’s stylish riads and boutique hotels make it a brilliant choice for a romantic break. This is a city built for exploring, and what better way to spend your Valentine’s weekend than wandering round the maze of streets.

Marrakech boasts an array of exciting cultural attractions, the most famous being the Djemaa el Fna Square. This tourist hotspot in the midst of the Medina is a constant piece of exciting street theater complete with fire eaters, jugglers, storytellers and more. At night a labyrinth of bustling food stalls appear, offering Moroccan specialities and filling the air with the scent of exotic spices. Above the mass of colourful chaos rises the spire of the 12th century Koutoubia Mosque, the city’s principal landmark, definitely worth a visit if you get chance. Whenever you wander to the square, day or night, you are sure to be entertained.

Try out your bartering skills at one of the many souks and bag yourself a bargain. Rummage through the array of Moroccan carpets, slippers, silver and leather ware and haggle with the locals over jewelry and love potions. Or why not take a horse and buggy ride, a much more authentic (and romantic) means of travel than a tourist bus, and explore the city’s winding streets and hidden treasures away from the crowds.

There are a number of museums and historical sites of importance immersed in the bustling modern day Marrakesh. Explore the Dar Sid Said Museum depicting the fascinating history of the Berber people. On display is Moorish cedar wood furniture and various arts and crafts. The Museum of Marrakesh is located in the Dar Menebhi Palace in the old center of the city and is a beautiful example of classical Andalusian architecture. The museum exhibits both modern and traditional Moroccan art, as well as historical books, coins and pottery.

Escape the buzz of the busy streets and venture to the beautiful Marjorelle Garden. A botanical garden designed by the French artist Jaques Marjorelle in 1924; its owners have included Pierre Berge and Yves Saint-Laurent. Wander through the carefully manicured garden filled with rare, colourful plants and secluded shady corners, perfect for avoiding the midday sun. The garden is also home to the Museum of Islamic Art, whose collection includes North African textiles from Saint-Laurent’s personal collection and paintings by Marjorelle.

After an exciting day of exploring, return to your boutique hotel or riad and admire the sunset over the city’s adobe-pink city walls set against the snow-tipped Atlas Mountains. At night Marrakech becomes a magical vision of glowing minarets in a sea of glimmering lights.
