With influences including Snail Mail, Phoebe Bridgers and Mazzy Star, Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter Maria DeHart has shared ‘Weird Timing’ – the first single to be taken from her record ‘Opening’ (out on Bandcamp on 18 May).
Describing her sound as ‘sad girl dream pop’, ‘Weird Timing’ finds Maria opening up about her innermost feelings as she reflects on past mistakes and ponders why it can be so difficult to move on: ‘Can’t shake you off. Why do I fall in love so easy?’; ‘You have pretty hair. I wish I didn’t care about you’.
Amidst melodic guitar hooks that reminded us of Soccer Mommy and Beach House, the song finishes with Maria heartbreakingly pleading to be let go: ‘I just wanna walk around with you and if you ask me to go away then I’ll leave you alone’.
