Mama Litas – a Little of Mexico in Kuwait

By Umkhaloodie

Last night, BoKhaloodie (you can read his review HERE) and I got invited to Mama Lita’s. It was muy bueno!

The owner is half Kuwaiti/half Mexican. I actually met Mama Lita, a very nice lady, born and raised in Mexico.  We stayed for around two hours sampling around 30% of the menu. The food is NOT fast food, it’s freshly prepared! If you want authentic mexican food, read on…………………..

We started with the Flautas, the Enchilladas and the Fajitas, all authentic mexican dishes/foods

I’m not into spicy food, (severe pepper allergy),but the owner was very accommodating and  my food was adapted to be ‘safe’ for me!

My favorite was definitely the Beef Fajitas, they were delicious. The beef was tender and full of flavour, absolutely loved it.  I enquired about the sauce but he wasn’t giving too much away, family secret but what he did say was yoghurt, cheese and tomato…….I’m going to try it, but I know it will never taste the same!  I wasn’t keen on the other two that we tried, but that was just personal preference, the meat was too spicy for me. The Fajitas were mild and I would definitely have that dish again.

The small restaurant is located in Mahboula- not a great area but like the owner said, mexican restaurants are small, pokey places and he said, there are very few restaurants that actually deliver in Mexico, the main reason being, the food just won’t be the same after one hour in a delivery cart.  Mama Lita’s does do delivery, but they prefer to know in advance so that the food is ready, on time and can be eaten immediately.

The owner is keeping with mexican prices, cheap… he doesn’t want his clients (who at the minute seem to be majority of american contractors living in abu halifa/mahboula) feeling that they are being ripped off, so prices are low and food is good. In the space of two hours last night, I saw around 20 customers.

It definitely isn’t a restaurant for ladies, the area is a bit shabby but definitely for men, coming home from the dewania at 4am, feeling peckish? Mama Lita’s is for you. They open at 4am – 11pm but the owner says he rarely closes by 11 as he is so busy.

The owner is very welcoming and will answer any questions that you might have, have a chat if you are in with him, his english is good too for those expats reading! He attended The University of Arizona, so plenty to talk about! He visits Mexico every summer although this summer, he is staying here to focus on the business! Big prospects coming in the future!

For those living in the Mahboula area, he starts serving breakfast from 4am. Be sure to try out the Horchata drink – it’s delicious! I won’t tell you the ingredients, I had great fun guessing! It’s very fresh and perfect for our Kuwait summer days!

Ladies- if you are passing by in the car, be sure to stop off and get some Churros – think donuts mixed with nutella…………. but 100 times better!
