Making Homemade Lemonade with the Better with Brita Campaign

By Thefoodiecoupleblog

Summer is well and truly here. (*crosses fingers*) and I wanted to celebrate. So to do so I fancied going back to those long hot spring summer days of my childhood making and selling lemonade in the front garden. Ok so we lived on a main road and I think I only did this a handful of times so the scene is a little less idyllic than I like to remember, but never the less it is a nice memory.

This lemonade recipe is dead easy and not very time consuming at all. Some recipes call for a syrup to be made first, which is great if you want to keep the syrup for a week or so and then just add sparkling water when you want a drink, but is a little more time consuming. This recipe is better if you just want a quick huge jug to last the day, or for entertaining. A BBQ would be  the perfect setting.

I’ve recently been using my Brita Marella Water Filter Jug a lot and am really finding that it makes a difference to recipes that require using a lot of water, like soups and stocks and wanted to try it with this recipe too. I made a couple of batches of lemonade, one using tap water and one using filtered water and I could honestly taste quite a bit of difference. The filtering reduces the unwanted chemicals in the water making it taste cleaner and fresher.

Brita have teamed up with Delicious Magazine, for the ‘Better with Brita’ campaign in an aim to find and celebrate people who are making fantastic food and drink in their own homes using filtered water and great local products, to give them the chance to sell their produce at The Big Feastival from 29th Aug- 1st Sept 2014.

A panel of expert judges will decide on a shortlist of people who will then be able to go to London to create their produce for the judges. Three lucky winners will then go on to attend and sell at the Big Feastival. Is there a better way to showcase your products and gain recognition?

This is a fantastic competition with a superb prize so Brita want to hear from you! For full details and rules visit the competition website here.

The recipe itself is pretty versatile. You could try pink lemonade by simply adding a drop of red food colouring or a few fresh raspberries. Or why not try swapping one lemon for a lime, or even adding a tablespoon of rosewater to the finished product for a really summery floral taste.

Makes approx 2 litres lemonade

Ingredients:

  • 6 unwaxed lemons
  • 320g caster sugar
  • 750 ml cold water filtered with a Brita Marella Jug
  • 1 litre soda water
  • lime slices

Method:

  1. Cut the ends off the lemons but there’s no need to peel them, cut into rough quarters and put them in a food processor, along with the sugar and 500ml of the cold water.
  2. Blend for about 30-60 seconds
  3. Pass through a fine sieve and discard all the pulp
  4. Top up with the rest of the water, soda and add ice cubes and slices of lime if you wish

Happy Drinking :)
