Make a New Bed Your New Year’s Resolution

Posted on the 27 December 2013 by Sharon Dalzell @Dalzells_Beds

Now that the Christmas festivities are over for another year, many of us are turning our attention to making New Year Resolutions for the incoming year.  Whether it’s giving up something or starting afresh with a new regime, there’s no better resolution to make than promising yourself a great night’s sleep.

Helping the body and mind to regenerate itself, sleep has many health benefits: a comfortable, supportive bed is essential to achieving this. The Sleep Council reminds us that a bed is only worth what you pay for it. A £1,000 bed on sale for £500 is not a bargain if it’s not the right bed for you.’

Are You Due a New Bed?

Many customers come in to our store complaining of with aches and pains that may have been caused by them sleeping on an uncomfortable bed. It’s true that aches and pains are a tell-tale sign that your bed and mattress aren’t giving you the proper support that you may need. There are however other ways of knowing whether your bed is past its best.

Ask yourself, is your bed seven or more years old? Is your bed looking worn or feeling lumpy? Did you have a more comfortable night’s sleep when sleeping on a different bed? Is it sagging in the middle - do you and your partner roll towards each other unintentionally during the night? If you’ve answered yes to one or more of these questions then it’s fair to say your bed is has lost its bounce!

Top Bed Buying Tips

  1. Spend as much as you can afford. A bed is an investment, every £100 spent on a new bed costs less than four pence a night over seven years – now that’s a real bargain!
  2. Buy as big a bed as you can: larger beds are more comfortable and being disturbed by a partner is one of the most common sleep complaints. With a larger bed you are less likely to disturb one another.
  3. Make shopping for a new bed a special trip, and remember if the bed is for two people, you should try it together.
  4. Spend a good five to 10 minutes or more lying down on each bed that has made your shortlist. Wear comfortable clothing, remove any outdoor wear including your shoes and lie in your normal sleep position and make some turns, too.
  5. Remember that a bed is a mattress and a base, don’t consider them in isolation.
  6. Every £100 invested in a new bed costs less than four pence a night over seven years – now that’s a real bargain!
