Magana – ‘Paul’

Posted on the 24 February 2024 by Spectralnights

Released ahead of new album ‘Teeth’ (released via Audio Antihero on 25 March), Jeni Magana’s latest single is a deeply personal piece about grief and mortality: ‘This song is for my friend, who dealt with death too early. These are her words, and I processed them by turning them into a song.’

Sparse and spectral with a sound akin to Jeni’s bandmate Mitski or Tomberlin, the observations and words – ‘I remember where I was when they first told me you took those pills to kill your pain’ – are heartbreaking, while the delicate delivery and subtle instrumentation bring this pain to the fore in an emotional and perhaps cathartic way.
