After garnering acclaim at the recent Cannes film festival, Ma'Rosa has quickly gained the interest of Filipino movie-goers. But how many of us really would be interested in watching this film?
Brillante Ma. Mendoza's latest offering, "Ma' Rosa" tells of Rosa (Cannes best actress Jaclyn Jose), a convenient store owner living in the slums of Metropolitan Manila. Together with her husband, Nestor (Julio Diaz), Ma' Rosa uses their convenient store to sell the illegal narcotic Methamphetamine. The husband-and-wife duo's fate changes one Saturday night when one of their neighbors begs Ma' Rosa to sell him a small pack of Methamphetamine. Unfortunately, it was a mere ploy, a part of a buy-bust operation which helped the corrupt police officers to arrest Rosa and Nestor without a warrant.
At the precinct, the policemen force Rosa to spill information about the source of the illegal narcotics in return for her and her husband's freedom. though hesitant, she realizes that she has no choice but to cooperate with the policemen. Upon revealing the name of the source, Rosa and Nestor find themselves still locked up, with a 50,000 pesos bail.
Rosa decides to raise the money by seeking help from her children, who are willing to do just about anything for their parents' freedom.
