WHAT IS LUPRON (LEUPROLIDE)?
Leuprolide (Lupron) is a medication used to treat breast cancer, prostate cancer, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, early puberty in both male and females, or as part of transgender hormone therapy. It can be used as an injection.
LUPRON SIDE EFFECTS:
Common side effects of Lupron Injection may include:
- Pituitary gland problems
- Cold symptoms such as sneezing, sore throat, stuffy nose, cough with or without mucus
- Fever and tiredness
- Stomach pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Wheezing, chest tightness, trouble breathing
- Hot flashes, sweating
- Dizziness
- Mood changes
- Headache, general pain
- Vaginal swelling, itching, or discharge
- Weight changes
- Decreased testicle size
- Decreased interest in sex.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- Seizures
- Swelling, rapid weight gain
- Painful or difficult urination
- Unusual changes in mood or behavior
- Sudden chest pain or discomfort, dry cough or hack, wheezing
- High blood sugar such as increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, hunger, fruity breath odor
- Problems with your pituitary gland such as sudden severe headache, changes in mood or behavior, vomiting, problems with your eyes or vision.
Rare but serious side effects also may occur; including:
- Muscle weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control
- Numbness, pain or unusual sensations in your back, weakness, or tingly feeling in the feet or legs
- Heart attack symptoms such as nausea, sweating, chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to the jaw or shoulder
- Signs of a stroke such as sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of your body), slurred speech, sudden severe headache.
INTERACTIONS:
Leuprolide (Lupron) may interact with other drugs and can cause serious side-effects. Before start or stop any medication, first take your doctor's approval. This drug may interact with other medications such as:
PRECAUTIONS:
Before using Leuprolide, tell your doctor or health care provider if you are allergic to it or if you have a history of any other allergies.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially of:
- Diabetes
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- High cholesterol
- Low levels of potassium in the blood
- Low levels of magnesium in the blood
- Mental/mood problems such as depression
- Seizures
- Bone problems such as osteoporosis
- Long-term alcohol use
- Use of certain medications such as corticosteroids and phenytoin
- Certain heart problems (heart failure, QT prolongation in the EKG, slow heartbeat)
- Tell your doctor if you have unusual vaginal bleeding.
This medication can affect fertility in males.
Lupron must not be used during pregnancy. It may harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor or health care provider if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant.
It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. It is not recommended to use this medication while breast-feeding. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
