If I told you about a great new place between the corner of Lonsdale St and Swanston St and the entrance to Melbourne Central, you probably wouldn’t believe me. It’s the blank space that comes between getting of the train and shopping haven; dotted with nameless sushi joints, beauty salons and other forgettables. However, here now lies something to remember.

Lt Nic is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it storefront; tiny, modest and understated from the front. Wood and whites extend the narrow cafe come lunch-stop. Pass the filters and the grand coffee machine and you’ll come to a beautifully presented array of delicious takeaway options. (If you’re lucky, you might be able to nab the little table at the front window.)

A love for premium coffee is evident as the staff were brewing and tasting their filters as I arrived. The beans are Rumble and there is an obvious plight for the perfect cup. For those after something cool (or no longer caffeine tolerant), Lt Nic have joined the ranks in those serving Karma Kola; organic and naturally sweetened.

Food follows the keep it simple principle: sandwich or salad or sweet. If you’re hungry (or can’t decide) the lunchbox is for you. Get one of each for $16. While the price may seem steep, quality ingredients ensure bang for your buck and the flavours swap around to keep you on your toes.

My ‘sweet chick’ boasted chunks of succulent marinated chicken and tangy yuzu avocado spread on a crisp toasted bun. Swap the chicken for braised beef and the avocado for crunchy chickpeas and you’ve got The Reuben sandwich. Both were inhaled in record speed.

The salads were equally delicious; a Moroccan pumpkin and couscous number or a creamy trout, bean and mayo. The sweets ranged from naughty (white chocolate and Nutella lamination) to a nice (sort of) carrot cake; sweet and sticky just like it should be.

Lt Nic is a real gem; a gift in a vicinity deprived of quality ingredients and quality coffee. The staff are warm and the space feels like a safe haven; protecting you from the bustling city streets outside.
