Amazon Music gets the credit for today's post because I found the song on one of their discover playlists. There are so many wonderful things to say about this track - (1) it has such a trippy, new wave, dream beat, and (2) it has some great advice about letting go of the past.
'Cause it might have been something, who's to say?Does it help to get lost in yesterday?
And you mighta missed something, don't say
'Cause it has to be lost in yesterday
And you're gonna have to let it go someday
You've been digging it up like Groundhog Day
'Cause it might have been something, don't say
'Cause it has to stay lost in yesterday
Tame Impala is a one-man band consisting of Australian musician Kevin Parker, except on tours. He started making music under the name in 2007 and has since released four albums. Today's song, Lost In Yesterday, is from his most recent album, The Slow Rush, in 2020. The single reached number one on Billboard's Adult Alternative chart, also his first hit in the United States. In 2021, it was nominated 'Song of the Year' and 'Most Performed Alternate Work' for the APRA Music Awards.
Aside from the song's message of the importance of letting go, the lyrics also tackle the idea of nostalgia and remembering it fondly, even though it may not have been the best at the time. It's one of those upbeat kinds of tracks that whenever you're feeling down about something that happened long ago, it's the perfect medicine to pick you back up again.
