Long Weekends For Wine Lovers in Europe

By Twothirstytravellers @2thirstytrav

If you’re a fan of a good glass of wine then a long weekend in a vineyard will sound heavenly. However some wine weekends can be better, and more affordable, than others. Here are three options – from the more conventional but beautiful locations to the off the beaten track options.

Hop over to Burgundy for world famous wines

Burgundy is one of the world’s most ancient wine districts. Its rich history of not just fine wine, but also cultural history, means the area has a plethora of exciting tours and opportunities to really get stuck in.

From the culinary delights of Dijon market to the beautiful architecture of old wineries, there is something for everyone to see in Burgundy. Authentica and Burgundy Discovery offer a range of wine tours throughout the region where you can see different vineyards and wineries. Additionally, Gevrey Chambertin hotel Les Deux Chevres have recently opened their wine school which offers boutique tours and tastings in the area.

Check out the biodynamic wine scene of Tuscany

A culture of natural and biodynamic wines has been growing in Tuscany in recent years. The region embraced ‘slow food’ culture, the want to preserve ancient methods and nurture biodiversity in our food and drink, since its start in the Piedmont in the 80’s.

Since then both food and wine makers have looked at how to keep their wares biodynamic and in the spirit of the slow food movement.

One of Tuscany’s most celebrated biodynamic wineries is Querciabella, which sits in the Chianti Classico and has pioneered the Tuscan natural wine movement. The winery offers tastings alongside masterclasses that will allow you to build upon your natural wine knowledge.

Have a look at the world’s smallest vineyard in Switzerland

Switzerland may not be particularly renowned for its wine. It lives in the shadow of the other great wine producers that are its neighbours. However Switzerland should not be snubbed for its wine industry.

In fact, Switzerland is home to a vineyard that claims to be the smallest in the world. Not only is it supposed to be the world’s smallest vineyard, it’s also owned by the Dalai Lama!

In the picturesque village of Saillon, home to the tiny vineyard, you can explore the jaw dropping scenery, treat yourself to some traditional Swiss food, take a dip in the thermal baths and, of course, a delicious glass of wine.
