A P-3C Orion conducts its flight demonstration during the inaugural Central Coast AirFest. Based out of Hawaii, this Orion belongs to Special Projects Patrol Squadron TWO (VPU-2) “Wizards”. Introduced in 1962, the Orion is a anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft developed for the United States Navy. Having served in excess of sixty years, current plans are for the Boeing P-8A Poseidon to eventually replace the active duty P-3Cs. On 27 January 1971, a stock P-3 set both FAI (world) and National Aeronautic Association (USA) records for Speed Over a Straight Course of 15/25 Kilometers of 500.89 mph, the US record still stands.
