Little Life Lessons To Take Onboard This Week

By Winyeemichelle
Something that I’m becoming increasingly aware of is that this blog portrays me to be some sort of superwoman who can boss things and be in a constant state of happy where every day is fueled by pink unicorns and glitter. Whilst I am a fairly chirpy chappy, I thought that I’d begin this new week with a few mantras that I like to keep in mind to keep this hippie Mish mindset ticking over, a few life lessons to take you through the week.

You’ve got this, girl

Every Monday, I set aside some time to plan out my week and figure out when I realistically have time to do what. In fact, I like to do this on Sunday evenings so I can sleep in peace. And I’m more than familiar with that feeling that washes over the best of us where you fret that you’re can’t get it all done. I used to stress SO much about menial things like this that I was signed off with acute stress. Trust me, I know the deal. But just remember that you’ve totally got this, girl. You’ve made it through 100% of your busy and manic days so far and that’s a darn good track record.

Happiness comes in ebbs and flows

As Negative Nancy as this may sound, it’s important to remember that happiness does arrive in ebbs and flows. Much like the dreaded Sunday blues, it’s not realistic to expect things to be sunshine and daisies all through the week and that’s completely okay. Lately I’ve been guilty of this. I’m often praised for being such a positive person but I often don’t feel that way. I’d hate to feel like I’m selling a false reality so let it be noted here that I almost always go through a serious pitfall each week. It’s when work feels like it’ll never let up for me to enjoy some semblance of a weekend and when I doubt my ability and skills. It’s when I miss my boyfriend and get upset that we can’t seem to spend more time together. It’s when I miss my old lifestyle in Hong Kong and when I feel stifled by my (pretty great!) situation. Happiness comes in ebbs and flows and whilst you may feel a little down in the dumps, remember it’s not a bad life, just a bad day (or two!).

You are enough

By Wednesday, it’s not uncommon for me to be sobbing into my dinner (I’m completely exaggerating for the sake of this post here) because I feel like I’m not up to scratch. I do worry all the time whether I ‘match up’ with my peers or other women my age and I’m realising that it’s not at all healthy. You are enough. You’re more than enough for your wonderful family and brilliant set of friends. Isn’t it odd to think that you’ll never really know the extent of whose lives you may have touched? The girl that just followed you on Instagram, the barista that you actually said ‘thank you’ to, the postman that you helped unhook a latched gate for… You are so much more than your present-day mini crisis.

Be a seeker of everyday magic

Right now, I lead a much slower lifestyle than I ever have and so it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and end up despising my everyday mundane. Honestly, as lively as my life might appear on Instagram or Twitter, I spend a surprising amount of time traipsing from my office to the fridge to the garden to sort out Milo’s ‘business’ and back. I spend even more time on the verge of tears trying to train Milo to come back in after popping to the loo. Glam. Thus a wonderful life lesson to takeaway for the week is to learn to find everyday magic. The sunspots glinting as you commute to work. The way coffee always fills up a paper cup perfectly. When your music matches your walking rhythm. The joy on somebody’s face as they meet up with a loved one. There are great things happening everyday, everywhere.

Work smarter, not harder

Something I dislike is the idea that working yourself to the bone is the best option. Whilst getting down to the daily grind and the ‘work hard, play hard’ mantra can be great in small doses, it certainly isn’t healthy and it’s important to pay attention to that. Don’t be afraid to use smart, well-considered shortcuts to complete your work. Don’t be afraid to leave the office on time a few times a week. Take care of Number One; yourself.
