Son Lux – Lost It To Trying SoundCloud

Son Lux’s latest single is…something else. “Lost It To Trying” plays out like a highly cinematic, futuristic love story in my movie brain, a montage of a love affair (possibly an alien one) tearing at the seams despite the lovers’ attempts at holding it together — “What will we do now? We’ve lost it to trying…” The track features Asthmatic Kitty newcomers, Lily & Madeleine, a sister duo whose harmonies have had us fawning, on vocals. Son Lux takes their angelic harmonies and brilliantly embeds them in something of a thick textural mass of chopped and sewn horns, live and programmed drums, flutes, and both heavy and light synths. The genius of the track, however, lies within its tensions: weighty yet buoyant, menacing yet soothing, stormy yet bright, delicate yet robust.

I really can’t say enough about the track, and I’m not all that surprised as Son Lux has been on a steady climb over the past few years. He collaborated with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti last year in forming s/s/s, together releasing an EP, Beak & Claw. There’s been recent talk of more to come from the trio. Son Lux has also been named NPR’s “Best New Artist of the Year” and is set to release his third full-length and first record on Joyful Noise (signed in May of this year). “Lost It To Trying” is the first single from Lanterns, which drops on October 29 (the same day as Lily & Madeleine’s debut!), and if this track is any indication of what’s to come, well, I’m not even sure the we can handle it.
