Even without the accompanying video, NiGHTMARE BOY’s “Mary” conjures horror story vibes via minor key piano backing and spooky imagery. Upon watching it, though, we see that NiGHTMARE BOY has a legitimate appreciation for the beauty of darkness. The video is a string of film student-esque shots of him at an old house being haunted by a beautiful girl (who I assume is Mary), while singing somberly into the camera. His Facebook cover image is a photo of Edgar Allen Poe, and that’s all we really need to frame his aesthetic.
The song is a gorgeous, gothic piano ballad with a golden, classic-sounding chorus. He’s garnered thousands of fans already with only two songs to his name thus far — “Mary” and a cover of Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” – mainly due to the fact that he’s dating (dated?) Lana del Ray. Even without the name-drop of a cult sensation, “Mary” is a great track with an appropriately creepy video to boot.
