The announcement for the upcoming Local Government (LG) Elections is expected to be made after the conclusion of the 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination. The Election Commission explained that issuing the announcement earlier could prompt candidates to begin campaigning during the exam period.
To avoid disrupting the examinations, it has been decided to delay the announcement until the exams are completed. The examinations, which were delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions, are anticipated to resume this week. In the meantime, a meeting of political party leaders concerning the LG Elections is set to take place tomorrow (3).
The meeting, to be chaired by the Leader of the House, Bimal Rathnayake, will convene in the afternoon. A final decision is also expected regarding the re-submission of nominations for the LG Elections. Political parties have opted to annul previously submitted nominations due to issues such as candidates changing party affiliations, some leaving the country, and others retiring from politics.
