Lets Talk About Fitness: ABP Southampton Half Marathon and 10km

By Threadandbutter @threadandbutter

It's official. Darren and I have successfully completed our first 10km race and it is safe to say I feel as if my legs are made of concrete. I am so pleased I managed to complete the whole course without stopping and I beat my personal best time which feels fantastic. Here are a few of my thoughts about the day:The Route: Before the race day I tried to steer clear of the route map in case it scared me too much and made me question how an earth I was going to reach the finish line. I looked the night before to check what roads would be closed and to pick out points for friends and family to meet up. This worked out quite well for me as on the day I didn't really know what was next and it kept me on my toes. The course was really enjoyable and included spots such as Southampton Parks, The Bargate, Ocean Village Harbour, St Marys Football Stadium, Southampton Guidhall and panoramic views from the Itchen Bridge.
I Beat The Bridge: When I spotted a banner saying "SHOW THAT BRIDGE WHO IS BOSS!" I knew I couldn't put it off for much longer...the Itchen Bridge was a comin'. Once I could see it towering above me, I kept my head down and managed to climb it at a steady pace.
Mile Markers: Dotted all along the course there were groups of mile markers including some very impressive cheerleader displays with all the necessary pom poms and bells, Brownie Girl Guides handing out water and of course members of the public with their friendly smiles and cheers. Despite having headphones in, I could still hear the encouraging cheers and they really helped get me through. Thank you Southampton!
Bleeding Gums Murphy - This may be a little tmi but it's the honest truth. I finished the race with a trainer full of blood because my toes were all getting a little too close for comfort. Lesson learnt: cut your toe nails before a big run.
A* - The event itself was organiased fabulously considering it was a first time for Southampton. From the sign up to the actual event, everything was A-OK. After booking my place I received regular emails keeping me updated on the happenings including training tips, event proceedings and info for the big day. The day itself saw a field full of charity tents, merch stands with the added group warm up sessions with music provided by the organisers of Common People. Pat on the back everyone!
Do you have any big races coming up soon? I was planning on completing a half marathon but it seems like a big jump from 10km straight up to a half so I am on the look out for something in between. Holla if you have any ideas.
