Even if you have no clue who she is, I’m sure you guys have seen pictures of the quirky and fabulous style icon that is Iris Apfel floating around. The ‘Iris’ documentary was released late last month and while I haven’t had a chance to attend a showing yet, I was interested in learning more about the 92 year old (yes, 92 years old) fashion legend. Surprisingly, there wasn’t much to be found on the internet. Weird right? All I managed to find were a few random interviews and hilarious quotes straight from the (very stylish) horse’s mouth. That definitely gives me even more of an incentive to get my butt in gear and go check out that documentary!
What I did learn though is that rare bird of fashion is a celebrated interior designer. She’s had her own fashion retrospective at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, ya know the place where the MET Gala is held every year? Major, right? She’s restored the White House for nine presidents, designed a makeup line for MAC, a jewelry line for HSN, is most recently selling about 800 pieces from her own personal collection on One Kings Lane, and these are just the ventures I read about via a quick Google search. I managed to hunt down a few common themes about Mrs. Apfel during my research that I thought I’d share as takeaways for all of us fashion lovers out there – young or old.
You can never go wrong with red lipstick. The style star swears by it, and is hardly ever photographed without her signature red pout!
It’s worth building a standout accessory collection. So many of the Iris Apfel quotes I read centered on her love of jewelry and accessories. She totally lives by the transformative powers that accessories can have on any look. I’ve been more into minimalist and barely there jewelry lately, but this gives me a reason to purchase more fun accessories going forward!
Your style doesn’t have to be one note. I honestly don’t think anything about this lady could be one note. Do you? But with that being said, her style is self described as eclectic (shocker right?) I think plenty of times, we all get bogged down with what’s popular and trendy instead of focusing on what we actually love and doing our own thing. Mrs. Apfel likes gals and gents who express themselves and are more individualistic, two characteristics I think we could all stand to have more of.
