Charlotte’s Web Chapter 19 The Egg Sac

Morning comes to the fair grounds. Wilbur looks up and sees the egg sac Charlotte had made in the dark.

“Is it a plaything?”

“Plaything? I should say not. It is my egg sac, my magnum opus.”

Wilbur learns that a magnum opus means “it is the finest thing you have ever done.”

Charlotte is weakened from making the sac and the web. She’s sad because she doesn’t think she will be alive when her 524 children hatch in the following spring.

Templeton returns to the pen with a bloated stomach, stuffed with the discarded fair food he had been eating all night.

“What a night!” Templeton stretches out in the hay and tells Wilbur and Charlotte that the large pig, Uncle, next door had been awarded the blue ribbon.

The Arables, Zuckermans, and Lurvy return to the fair, they see Wilbur and the web and are in fine spirits, however, once they learn that Uncle had won the blue ribbon they become tearful and upset.

Determined to keep Wilbur clean, Mrs. Zuckerman goes to the truck and returns with a gallon of buttermilk. They give Wilbur a bath after which he looks (and feels) both stunning and humble.

An announcement is made at the fair for Mr. Zuckerman to bring his famous pig to the judges’ booth for a special award.

Everyone is excited and hugs each other. “All ready boys? Let’s go!” They pack up Wilbur in his crate to bring him over.

Charlotte remains in the stall, exhausted, her heart not beating as strong as it usually did, but comforted by the thought she had saved Wilbur’s life and that he was going to be okay.

Chapter 19 Lessons Learned

Charlotte makes her egg sac which is her magnum opus.

Lesson Learned –Every person needs to make her own magnum opus.

Templeton is stuffed from all the fair food he has eaten.

Lesson Learned –.If you don’t want your belly to bloat, then don’t eat too much.

Uncle wins a blue ribbon and everyone is upset.

Lesson Learned –It’s okay to be upset when you don’t come in first.

Mrs. Zuckerman gets some buttermilk to give Wilbur a bath.

Lesson Learned: If you’re upset about not coming in first then don’t just sit there, do something.

An announcement is made for Mr. Zuckerman to bring Wilbur to the judges’ booth for a special award. Charlotte realizes that between the web and the award, Wilbur will be fine.

Lesson Learned: Never, never, never, give up.
