Today is Can Day and we’re all very excited about that.
Obviously this statement needs a little bit of a backstory. I am on a 10-day cleanse that had been recommended to me by my Lyme Disease doc. I did it a year ago and after gaining so much weight while my mother was in hospice, and after participating in our family rib-off, I decided that the time was right to do it again.
It’s nothing horribly drastic. In its essence it includes clean food with supplements added. The supplements are fairly potent with regard to vitamins and minerals (neon yellow pee) which is why it’s very important to drink at least 3 quarts a day of water while on this cleanse (which also means you need to scope out where bathrooms are when you leave the house), but when it is over, your body is basically recharged with what it needs. Go forth and conquer.
I’ve been posting pictures of what I eat on my Facebook page, but here’s a typical example of a meal while on this cleanse. Last year when I did this, I ate animal protein, this year I’m going all out and doing vegan.
Looks pretty yummy, right?
Along with the food and supplements, I’ve been good about getting in at least 10K steps a day (about 5 miles.) It’s all been a good move for me.
I have no complaints while on this cleanse. Okay, maybe a tiny one – I met a friend at a local brewery and sat and watched while she drank her ice, cold, fresh, beer and I drank, well, more water. But you know, it was okay, because I knew that the next day might be “Can Day” and I was more psyched about that than I was about having a beer.
So that brings me back to what the heck is Can Day?
You know how you try and try to lose weight and when the scale only moves a smidge you get a little discouraged? Well I decided that for every pound I lost, I’d put that pound in a backpack and take it with me while I go for my 5 miles walks.
One pound, two – didn’t feel like too much, but 4, 5 and now 6 feels like a lot.
And that weight used to be on my body and not my back. I conveniently leave my backpack by the front door and when the kids come home, they pick it up to feel my progress – “way to go mom.” Because saying you lost 6 pounds (especially when it doesn’t look like you’ve changed at all) is one thing. Picking up that 6 pounds from the floor can be rather impressive.
At this point, Can Day is more important to me than a glass of cold beer. (Sorry Rosemarie.)
And because I made that decision, today is Can Day #6. Go me.
With determination, I hope to be celebrating many more.
