Learning New Tricks

By Jyoti Arora @Jy0tiAr0ra

I have been blogging since 2011. And yet, I never dared to step out of the security and comfort of free WordPress sites. The reason was not the fear of expenses involved in managing a self hosted blog. I hesitated because of my ignorance. I had no idea what I would need to do, how much of coding, scripting knowledge I would need to manage a self hosted blog.

But recently, some of my friends encouraged me to try it out. And finally, it was the assurance of Garima, who herself is managing a very successful blog SweetSharing, that I decided to take the plunge. And I have stepped out of the security and comfort of free WordPress blogging and have moved my tech blog techn0treats.wordpress.com to self hosted technotreats.com.

My friends were right. Moving the blog was easy. Setting it up with new theme and finding good plugins is time consuming though. However, the only thing that caused me worry was that when I redirected my old blog to new, it failed to work in the beginning. Finally, my another friend gave me a suggestion which quickly got all the links working as they should.

And now that all is working, I find myself worrying about the blog’s SEO and Google ranking and all that. I have worked hard at my tech. blog even when it was a free WordPress site. So I sure don’t want it to lose its ranking. But the few days during which the redirects were not working seem to have done some damage. But I hope I’ll be able to pick it up again.

All in all, it has been quite an interesting experience.
