Laughlin & Mesquite Pet Friendly

By Ciciwriter @suemagic

You may visit Las Vegas on a regular basis. But there are a couple of other cities nearby that you might consider going to and taking your pooch with you.

Laughlin is about 1-1.2 hour south of Las Vegas , 90 miles south of Las Vegas,  Located along the Colorado River, Laughlin offers all types of water activities including camping, boating, jet skiing, fishing, etc.  The casinos that line the river offer live entertainment and casino gaming. And the atmosphere is of a small town rather than a large city. If your dog loves the water, this may be a fun place to visit. Probably the best time to visit is fall, spring or winter. Summertime is HOT HOT HOT outside, even hotter than Las Vegas.

Pet Friendly Lodging

The Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall offers 416 rooms including 30 clean and comfortable Pet Friendly rooms and 80 overlooking the beautiful Colorado River.

There is no size limit on pets, and pet rooms run $10 above the price of standard rooms. To reserve a pet room, you should reserve over the phone at 800-634-3469.

Rooms start at just $29.00 per night, plus tax.  Pet rooms do require a $100 cash deposit upon check-in and is returned after inspection at check-out.

I have stayed at Harrah’s Laughlin by myself pre-Cici and it is a wonderful property. Clean rooms with all kinds of amenities including fast food and a restaurant on the property. It is also very affordable to stay in the Central Tower.

Harrah’s Laughlin

Harrah’s Laughlin (harrahslaughlin.com) offers guest rooms in multiple towers, an on-site casino, pool, riverside beach, fitness center, day spa and on-site shopping. The PetStay program at Harrah’s allows only dogs, with a weight limit of 50 pounds, and comes with additional room amenities, including food and water dishes, treats, a mat and disposable waste bags. Upgrading to a pet room costs an additional $40 fee per night.

Outdoor activities

Dogs are allowed on some of the water taxis, depending upon the Captain and the dogs. Dogs are also allowed to walk on leash on the RiverWalk and at the beaches.

Dogs are allowed in the Lake Mead National Recreational Area, but must be kept on a leash (not to exceed a length of 6 feet).  Never leave dogs in the car as temperatures can reach 130 F. Pick up after your pet and don’t leave any trash along the trail.  There is a bathroom, and trash cans can be found in the parking lot at the entrance to the trail.

Grapevine Canyon is located south of Spirit Mountain, which is a designated wilderness area in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.  It is about 15 minutes by car from Harrah’s. Spirit Mountain and the surrounding canyons are considered sacred grounds of the Yuman tribes including the Mohave, Hualapai, Yavpai, Havasupai, Quechan, Paipai and Maricopa.  The main attractions along the Grapevine Canyon trail are the petroglyphs, rock drawings created by Prehistoric Indians.

Grapevine Canyon is accessible from the Christmas Tree Pass Road, located off State Highway 163, six miles west of Davis Dam at mile marker 13. Turn right onto the dirt road. Two miles from the highway, a short spur road to the left leads into the parking area for Grapevine Canyon. Remember to carry plenty of water. Be sure to remove all your trash from the area. Remember this is a sacred area, take only pictures and memories, leave only footprints – on the trail! Source: www.nps.gov

Mesquite is north of Las Vegas and the weather is a bit cooler. There are fun places to visit along the way from Vegas to Mesquite. Also, you can easily drive to Utah from Mesquite. It is a small town atmosphere, too and lots of retirees live here.

I have stayed at the Virgin River and Cici may or may not have been with me during one visit (I cannot remember)… The hotel rooms are regular motel fare and affordably priced.  We also stayed at a local motel that was expensive. There were lots of places around town to walk Cici and parks to picnic.

The Virgin River offers affordable deals on conveniently located hotel rooms. getting to and from the Virgin River is a cinch— right off Exit 122 on I-15 in Mesquite Nevada, about an hour north of Las Vegas and a half hour south of Saint George, Utah.  The Virgin River is the best pet friendly hotel in Mesquite, and for just $10 extra per day and a $50 pet deposit, your beloved animal friends can enjoy their own vacation in one of their pet friendly rooms.
