Abstract

Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that can affect children (type 1 diabetes) as well as adults (type 2 diabetes) in two different ways. Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults is a type of diabetes that affects adults in a similar way as type 1 diabetes affects the body and is named type 1.5 diabetes by some researchers. Diabetes is related to the malfunctioning of the pancreas and mainly occurs in adults above 32 years of age. In this article, we will discuss all the possible causes of Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults. Also, we will go through the symptoms and diagnostic criteria for it. Since diabetes is a life-long disease that has no permanent cure, we have some drugs in Ayurveda that can help manage this disease without injections and day-to-day dependency on insulin.

Introduction

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) is an autoimmune disorder in which your pancreas does not work properly to produce adequate amounts of insulin needed by your body for normal functioning. The acute stage of just being diagnosed with LADA can be managed without insulin for about the first six months, with the help of adequate diet and lifestyle modifications (yoga and exercise) and supportive Ayurvedic treatment. Patients suffering from type 2 diabetes have a more vulnerable chance to get LADA. But, since diabetes is a lifelong disease, your body will lose the ability to produce natural insulin and may need to depend on artificial insulin for that. But LADA has had a very slow progress rate, over many years.

Ayurvedic Aspect

In Ayurveda 'Madhumeh' and 'Prameh' are referred to as 'type 1' and 'Type 2' diabetes respectively. 'Jaatha prameh' is referred to as Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA). This is an Ojas kshaya vyadhi that needs a proper evaluation and treatment. Certain genetic factors and Poorvaj karma factors are considered as one of the causes of the occurrence, along with some wrong lifestyle adaptations that include a sedentary lifestyle and Kapha vardhak aahar intake. Like every roga, this roga is also an outcome of imbalanced (aggravated or suppressed) Vatadi doshas. Ayurvedic medicines and lifestyle modifications help a lot of patients healthily deal with this disease and avoid additional complications of this disease.
