La Vita è Bella!

Well, the title is a bit of a give away but I’m hoping the image above remains mystifying. It was a photo taken during a recent trip to Europe. I had the opportunity to do the kind of exploring that is a particular pleasure of mine – checking out supermarkets and other places where people purchase food. The gallery below shows some of the delights I came across: endless impossible-to-differentiate-to-the-uninitiated jars of passata and packets of pasta; olives, which had been pitted and then individually stuffed, waiting to be fried (tasty but what a palaver!); and some cheeses of most intriguing and comic shapes. There’s a contrast between the industrialised and standardised variation in the big supermarkets and the unpredictable freshness of little independent specialist shops (including those just for cheese!).

Somehow our gastromic experiences seemed to involve a lot of meat!

Note the contrast between the charming and characterful (admittedly a bit touristified) little villages in the mountains and the souless flat endless beaches of the coast. Hot too.

So you’ve got it – obvious really – uncooked pizza dough in Italy!
