Kim Jong Un Visits Orphanage and Baby Home in Pyongyang

DPRK state media reported on 4 February (Tuesday) that Kim Jong Un (Kim Chong-u’n) visited the orphanage and baby home in Pyongyang.  Also in attendance were Kim P’yo’ng-hae (Korean Workers’ Party [KWP] Secretary and Director of the Cadres’ Affairs Department), Ri Jae Il (Senior Deputy [1st Vice] Director of the KWP Propaganda and Agitation Department), Pak T’ae Song (Deputy [vice] Director of the KWP Organization Guidance Department), Hwang Pyong So (Deputy [vice] Director of the KWP Organization Guidance Department) and Ma Won Chun (Deputy [vice] Director of the KWP Finance and Accounting Department).  Kim Jong Un’s last observed appearance was his attendance at a photo-op with officers and service members of Korean People’s Army [KPA] Unit #323.

Kim Jong Un first visited the orphanage where “lovely children engrossed in cheerful playing vied with each other to come to his arms.”  Kim Jong Un “gently patted children on the cheeks for a while in his arms” and “kindly asked them how old they were and if they had any trouble.”  According to KCNA the children were “touched by the parental love and affection which they had longed for even in dreams” and sang a song titled “Thank You, Marshal Kim Jong Un.”  The children said that they have nothing to desire more in the world as he provided them with nice dresses in every season and sent them even confectionery, fishes, fruits and honey and that they had “eagerly waited for him” then they “loudly called him ‘father!’”  Kim Jong Un toured the orphanage and “acquainted himself in detail with the conditions for upbringing and education and living environment.”

He also visited the baby home where he looked at infants as they slept and enquired about the infants’ ages.  In a play room he “let them speak and happily smiled at them.”  Her permitted triplets to sit upon his knee and remembered that “President Kim Il Sung (Kim Il-so’ng) and leader Kim Jong Il (Kim Cho’ng-il) were very pleased whenever they were told about the birth of triplets and said that “it was a good sign of prosperity of the country.”  Kim Jong Un toured the kitchen and was briefed about the food served to the children.  According to KCNA he  ”was satisfied to know that the children at the baby home were well fed for their growth like those at the orphanage in the light of the science of nutrition” and he said “that the children are the king of the country” and that he would make sure that the children would be provided with 300 grams of fishes per day from this year.”  He also instructed that meat and fish be supplied to the orphanage and baby home, as well as dried persimmons.  He said that “orphans long for affection more than others” and stressed “the need to bring them up to be clever and upright as their parents failed to do so and let them stoutly grow free from the sorrow of being orphans so that they may be dependable pillars of the country.”  He also  issued instructions “for improving the work of baby homes and orphanages.”

According to KCNA, Kim Jong Un remarked that “orphans are also successors to our revolution and pillars of the future” and “that it is the firm determination of our party to build up all baby homes and orphanages across the country at the same level as the revolutionary schools for the children of revolutionary martyrs.Sumptuous meal, warm cradle and excellent educational conditions and environment are a prerequisite to raising children well.” He added that “the party will build baby home and orphanage of Pyongyang City on the picturesque bank of Taedong River” and underlined “the need to spruce up baby homes and orphanages in provinces and the municipalities [and] called for setting an example and generalizing it.”  Kim Jong Un “expressed expectation and conviction that nurses and teachers of baby homes and orphanages would put forward children as king of the country and uphold generation after generation Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il’s outlook on the rising generations as they showed loving care for children all their lives.”
