Kick the Clutter

Let’s face it. Most of us want a garage that looks like that second one, but in reality it usually looks like this first one. The garage is often the dumping ground for every single storage item, creating clutter and chaos. What do you mean my car is supposed to fit in there?
Before it gets even hotter than it already is, now is the time to get your garage organized and transform it into a clean, functional space. You just might be able to start parking the car in its intended space and easily locate items right when you need them. Here are a few quick tips to jump-starting your own garage transformation.

Toss it: If you haven’t used something in a few years, you probably won’t use it again in the next few years. Let it go. Donate reusable items and toss or recycle the things no one could make use of.
Categorize it: Separate your items into different categories to be stored together. This will help you locate items easier when you really need them. Group holiday/seasonal items, yard equipment, sports gear, tools, and home project supplies into categories and store them in an area that makes the most sense according to how often they are used.
For example, holiday and seasonal items are used only a few times a year. Store them up high and out of the way. Sports gear, tools, and yard equipment are used more frequently, so storing them lower in a more easily accessible place makes sense.
Bring it Up With the Right System: You can get your car back in the garage without the tight squeeze and worry of running over things by taking advantage of all the wall space your garage provides.
Utilize shelving, hooks, and cabinets to get everything stored up off the floor. Hooks are great for hanging bikes, sports gear, yard tools, and ladders off the floor. Use drawer organizers to store and organize small items like tools, nails, and project supplies inside cabinet and drawer systems. Get even more creative by turning other household items into a useful storage system.

Label it: What's the point of going through all this hassle if you still can't find anything? Use clear bins or label each bin according to its contents for easy identification of the items when needed.
