Keeping Your Senses Sharp

By Lyndsay S @lyndsinreallife

If there is one thing that we rely on in life, it’s our senses. Not only are they keeping us connected to the world, but they’re also what we rely on to get around every single day. We need to keep our senses in check, and as they gradually fade as we age, we need to take extra care of them where possible.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways that we can keep our senses sharp and ready for anything. We don’t need to do much – but the senses that we get, we need to look after them while we can. Below, we’ve got some suggestions for keeping those senses as sharp as possible.

  1. The first thing to do is to quit smoking. You’re restricting your blood flow to the nerve endings, the more that you do this, the worse your senses will get. Did you know that smoking can cause you to lose your sight? How about your sense of taste? Smoking can affect these as much as it can mean losing a lung to cancer one day. Start a program to cut back, and you’ll see improvements.
  2. Seeing your doctor is essential. Regular health checks can do so much for your senses. For example, seeing Retina Associates for your eyes and ensuring you head to the audiologist for your hearing tests can make a difference to the deterioration of your senses. You must book regular appointments for your eyes, ears, and your nerve issues – this way, you can preempt any problems.
  3. It’s so hard to reduce stress when life is so busy. However, stress has a significant impact on our bodies. Our hair goes white with stress. Our blood pressure shoots up, and our body remains in a state of alertness and worry. When this happens, our nerves are shot, and you can link stress to sight and hearing loss. You can’t eliminate stress entirely, but you can minimise it as much as possible.
  4. Adjust your diet to do better for your senses. We know that fish and nuts are two of the most omega-rich foods out there, and we know that fruit is an excellent source of vitamin D. It’s essential that you eat the right foods and a balanced diet can do wonders for your overall health. High blood pressure is the cause of many issues with your sight and hearing, and if you can minimize your blood pressure with your diet, you should do it! Your eyes matter, so add in different foods that support their health.
  5. When it comes to working, always have the right lighting and for your eyes and the right ergonomic furniture to work with. You need to be able to have a balance with your workplace, and the eyes need to be less strained.

You may not have considered how much you use your senses, but today is the day you give it some consideration and book to have your hearing and sight assessed. It could make a big difference for you!
