"My momma was raised in the era when
Clean water was only served to the fairer skin
Doing clothes you would have thought I had help
But they wasn't satisfied unless I picked the cotton myself
You see it's broke nigga racism
That's that "Don't touch anything in the store"
And this rich nigga racism
That's that "Come in, please buy more
What you want, a Bentley? Fur coat? A diamond chain?
All you blacks want all the same things"
Used to only be niggas now everybody playing
Spending everything on Alexander Wang
New SlavesYou see there's leaders and there's followers
But I'd rather be a dick than a swallower"-Kanye West
While Kanye is always so closely scrutinized and made fun of for his antics, I think I have figured him out just a bit. While I think people do not take the 'revolutionary' Kanye seriously because, let's face it, he has a history of being unpredictable, but you have to be able to see the forest, not just the lone tree. Kanye West is a musical genius and while I think he isn't the person to try and start the 'buy US, by Us' movement, I understand the point he tries to make SOMETIMES, this is NOT really one of those times. Take a look in your closet, what do you see? All of these labels that do not cater to our people, do not feel our struggle, and do not give back to our communities, but wait? Does Kanye? YES, he does! However, everyday most of us strive to own these things that is supposed to make us feel 'a part of', make us feel important, and everything in the community isn't good FOR the community. While Mr. West's clothing line is more shocking than fashionable, (it seems he brought up a whole bunch of scraps and had them sewn together just to prove he could make a million from garbage), it is COMPLETELY different than what you will find anywhere else. I guess we'll call it Boho-Chic. I am not sure who the target audience is for the Yeezus 2015 line, but they need to go back to the drawing board. Kanye produced at a drastically less quality the same thing we have been buying for years; Bullsh!t at a high price. Now this picture is circulating from Kanye's concert at the Hollywood Bowl, I'm not gonna lie, the picture first gave me pause, then it made me really angry at Kanye, then it made me start thinking. I guess he got desired results. I had to ultimately laugh at Kanye because while I see the point he is trying to make, it is going over the head of most people. It seems he believes that systematic racism can end; FOR HIM! Kanye West feels like no matter where he goes they should kiss his ass because he is Kanye West first and African American second. Kanye West is fighting a war on behalf of himself and you know what? I'm not enlisting. I didn't sign up for this sh!t. Money can't buy the respect that he feels he deserves. He doesn't realize the people that can't stand him these days are the very ones that use to love him (myself included) and it is his fault we are left with a bitter taste in our mouths. Kanye's Yeezus urban line has incorporated everything from crosses and grim reapers to confederate flags. I will probably ruffle a couple of feathers with my next statement but, no one will take anything Kanye says about racism, classism, or anything else ending with 'ism' too seriously because no one is a fool enough to think that just because people embrace a black MAN does not mean they feel the same for black people collectively. This isn't to say that the Kardashian/Jenners are racist, they have black friends :), I am sure they have never called or thought of a black person as a 'nigger'. When Graduation debuted, Kanye had an army of people inspired and feeling like they could conquer the world. These days it's hard for me not to think he is on drugs. I do not understand the point of this concept in this picture, and I do not really care to. If anyone is a 'New Slave' as Kanye West put it, it is him. He is a slave to attention, he is a slave to the media, he is a slave to his money, and he is a slave to his narcissism.
