Kandinsky Squares in Felt

Spring always brings one of the biggest fundraisers to my school – the Silent Auction. Classroom projects that are colorful, quick and simple are what I am always on the lookout for. Thanks to a recent large donation of felt, I’m going to try this out to see what my older students can do.1. Students will have a 6" square cardboard to trace and cut their background felt.2. Starting with the center, students will cut out an irregular shape from one of the colors of felt. They will glue it with craft glue to a larger piece of felt, and cut another irregular shape around that. These two steps are repeated until the shape is large enough to fill and glue to the background square. It is important that lots of “wobbly” shapes are made. Kandinsky’s art was not made with a lot of even circles. Uneven shapes are the best!3. I plan to attach all the squares to a large black piece of felt with a border around the edge. Careful cutting and gluing I think will be essential in making this project turn out.
